Legacy Trust

The Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust

In honor of the Blackstone River's role in American history, the Tourism Council has established the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust. The Trust exists for the purpose of obtaining private and public financial support for future development projects for the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

The Trust invests the funds for the benefit of the Valley. The Blackstone Valley Tourism Council is comprised of Trustees who are responsible for the business of the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust. Gifts may be made through the Foundation in cash, stocks, and bonds and are tax deductible.

Leaving a Legacy

Many friends tell us that they wish they could do more for the Blackstone Valley, but are not sure how. One option to consider may be a deferred or planned gift. This could mean remembering the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust in your will or one of several other gift-giving options that are reviewed in this material. Some options may give you personal tax benefits and at the same time leave you with the satisfaction that your gift will contribute to future generations.

Through you, the tradition of remembrance lives today at the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. In honor of the Blackstone River's role in American history, the Tourism Council has established the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust.

Since 1985, the Tourism Council has worked conscientiously to make the Blackstone Valley a viable historic, educational tourist destination. With the success of past projects, there is no better time to support the Tourism Council's efforts. To pay tribute to the vision of the Council’s donors, the Tourism Council will place each contributor's name on a plaque that will adorn the Tourism Council's headquarters.

Completed Projects

The following projects have been successfully completed:

  • The building of the Blackstone Valley Explorer: A 49 passenger canopied riverboat, launched on the river in 1999, takes guests on an educational tour of the Blackstone Valley National Corridor..
  • The building of the Samuel Slater Canal Boat and Bed & Breakfast: An authentic British canal boat built in Cambridgeshire, England and launched at the Central Falls Landing on the Blackstone River on May 6, 2000.
  • The operation of the Blackstone Valley Trolley: The 33-passenger Trolley is used for touring throughout the Blackstone Valley, Rhode Island. We have since retired the Trolley and it is being operated in South County.
  • Double Decker Bus for the Blackstone Valley: Imported an authentic double-decker bus from the streets of England and offered guided tours of the Valley. We have since retired the bus and it is operating in Philadelphia. The Council is considering a replacement.

How You Can Help

There are several ways that friends can support the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council's future projects:

  • Gifts of Cash - A simple way to make a donation to the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust.
  • Gifts of Stocks, Bonds & Mutual Funds - Giving stocks and bonds that have increased in value and that you have owned for more than a year provide greater tax benefits than cash gifts. The benefits have two purposes. Your charitable deduction is based on the full market value on the day the gift is given, not on your original cost. Furthermore, the capital gains tax is completely avoided on the appreciation.
  • Gifts Through Your Estate - Bequests - A gift by bequest for the benefit of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council through the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust can be included in the body of your existing will or by a simple clause, an appendix. Bequests to the Trust will reduce your tax liability. Those who love the Blackstone Valley and support the many positive efforts of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council may want to perpetuate their support through a bequest of:
  • Life Insurance - The Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust can be named as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
  • Financial Accounts - It can be indicated that savings, CDs or other accounts, including IRAs, will be payable to the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust upon your death.
  • Revocable Trusts - Lifetime trusts relieve the property owner of management responsibilities, reduce probate costs and provide privacy. The Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust can be named as a beneficiary of your revocable trust.

Future Projects

With the goodwill of the Blackstone Valley Legacy Trust, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council looks to accomplishing the following projects:

  • River Education Center: Construct a hands-on environmental learning center to educate children about the Blackstone River. This interactive exhibit would include a fresh water aquarium at the Central Falls Landing.
  • Underwater Research Equipment: Purchase equipment to assist children in studying the Blackstone River as well as providing the Blackstone Valley Explorer with improved gear to enhance this project.
