Blackstone Valley - Amber Valley Compact

In June of 1994 in Belper, England, the birthplace of Samuel Slater, the formal twinning of the Blackstone Valley and the Amber Valley Borough Council became official when the Blackstone Valley-Amber Valley Compact was signed thereby continuing the development of a relationship between the City of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Belper, England that will concentrate on international economic development, the arts, culture, social ties, and land use issues.

Blackstone Valley Scenic Railway Tours

Since 1989, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, in partnership with the Providence and Worcester Railroad Company, has sponsored train tours of the Blackstone Valley including the Fall Foliage and Shopping Excursion from Woonsocket, Rhode Island to Putnam, Connecticut, and the always exciting Polar Express. www.tourblackstone.com/rail.htm

Blackstone Valley State Park Visitor Center

In January, 2006, the Blackstone Valley State Park Visitor Center, located in Lincoln, Rhode Island on northbound Interstate Route 295, celebrated its grand opening. The Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and boasts a tourism information kiosk, exhibits of Pawtucket’s Slater Mill and several Blackstone Valley destinations, public rest rooms and Dunkin Donuts/ Baskin Robbins. Just a short walk from the Center, is a new half-mile long link to the Blackstone Bikeway and the historic Wilbur Kelly House.

Blackstone Valley Visitor Center

In September of 1999, the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, located in the Benjamin Chester Building at 175 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI, celebrated its grand opening and currently welcomes approximately 100,000 visitors annually. Visitors Center highlights include: an informational kiosk, a 90 seat theatre, a revolving art exhibit by members of the Pawtucket Arts collaborative, the Slater Mill Gift Shop and Gallery, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority inter-modal transportation center, and the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council offices. www.tourblackstone.com/visitorcenter.htm

Package Tour  Development

For the past 12 years, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council has been developing tours of the Blackstone Valley with Elderhostel, a hands-on educational learning program for senior citizens. Beginning in 2004, the Council took a leading role in co-coordinating “Tour Rhode Island”, an event that encourages Rhode Islanders to visit their home state. In May 2005, approximately 1200 passengers filled 25 motor coaches and visited the Blackstone Valley, Newport, Block Island, Providence, Warwick, the East Bay and South County. More

Blackstone Valley Tourism Network

Representatives of hotels, restaurants, museums, historic building sites and other tourism destinations of the Blackstone Valley meet bi-monthly to provide members educational opportunities, program updates, and discuss marketing strategy for an informational networking opportunity. More

Blackstone River Valley "Footsteps in History" Preserve America Weekend highlighted the historic and cultural attributes of the Blackstone River Valley by providing a weekend to celebrate historic, cultural and artistic sites. Programs, activities, and open houses provided the opportunity for the public to enjoy and learn.
